anaco is home to the ancient Aymara. Tiahuanaco was first discovered by Cieza de Leon in 1549 while he was searching for the Incan capital. The city lays near the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca, and about 72 miles west of La Pez. Tiahuanaco is well known for its intriguing stone work, called Ashlar. Unfortunately, little is known about Tiahuanaco, because no forms of writing have been found. However, historians believe that the name Tiahuanaco comes from the Aymaran words, "Stone In Center".
